There’s an old joke about a physicist who’s asked to use science to help a dairy farmer – and starts by approximating a spherical cow in a vacuum.


But physics-based models can help us to understand how groups of animals behave in a herd or flock.

In particular, researchers have gained insights into the behaviour of sheep – and might even be able to offer shepherds new tips about controlling their flocks. Welcome to the science of sheep physics!
